ABOUT THE SERIES “VIAJE AL PAÍS DE LAS ALMAS”

"Viaje al país de las almas" is a project that started in the late nineties, which continues until today, on the traditional beliefs of the Akan in the southeast of Ivory Coast. There, some communities continue to maintain contact with the spirits, through the Komian or animist priests who in a trance state are possessed by the geniuses of the forest and of the water. Yéo Douley, a man from Abidjan, undertakes a journey that will take him to the grave of his animist mentor for a ritual liberation.

The project has already borne two fruits such as the book "Viaje al país de las almas" and the film "Retorno al país de las almas", an approach to the world of African animism, in which it also documents initiation rituals and phenomena of possession.

ABOUT THE “SOCOTRA” SERIES

Socotra is an island in the Indian Ocean, two hundred and fifty kilometers from the Horn of Africa and almost four hundred from the coasts of Arabia, which has preserved a unique flora and fauna, with species typical of other eras. The author initiates an expedition to the mountains of the interior, accompanied by the grandson of the last sultan, overthrown by the communists of Aden, the naive and young Ahmed and several camel drivers. The photographs show the experiences lived during the expedition, such as the conversations around a fire, where stories of fabulous birds, witches and yins will be told.
Both the photobook and the accompanying film are based on the Socotra book. La isla de los genios, published in 2011 by Atalanta Ediciones, which won the 2012 Caminos del Cid Award.
