ABOUT CRISTINA GARCÍA RODERO

Cristina García Rodero is considered one of the most important photographers in our country, and has been the first Spaniard to enter the photojournalism agency Magnum.

Graduated in Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid, she began her teaching career in 1974 teaching drawing at the School of Arts and Crafts in Madrid. In 1983 she began teaching photography classes at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Complutense University of Madrid, an activity that she carried out until 2007. She has combined her teaching work with photographic creation and collaboration in various Spanish and foreign periodicals.

In 1973 she set out the task of photographing customs and festivals throughout Spain for which she received a scholarship. Later she has made reports on traditions in different countries. Her photographic work could be framed in the report, although from a very personal point of view, it has been exhibited in France, Germany, the United States, Great Britain, etc. Distinguished with numerous awards, including the Planeta Photography Prize (1983), the Eugene Smith Prize for Humanist Photography in New York for her project on “Traditional life, festivals, cults and rites in the European Mediterranean” (1989), the 1996 National Photography Prize from the Ministry of Culture and more recently, in 2000, the Bartolomé Ros prize for the “best Spanish professional career in Photography” and the 2000 Godó Prize for Photojournalism awarded by the Conde de Barcelona Foundation.

García Rodero's work has been present on several occasions at the Art Basel Fair (Juana de Aizpuru Gallery) and has been selected to participate in the "Always a little further" exhibition presented within the framework of the 51st Biennale de Venezia, 2005.

ABOUT THE HIDDEN SPAIN SERIES

Text taken from the exhibition presented at the Obra Social “la Caixa” Seville in 2011. Curator: Lola Garrido

García Rodero started almost thirty years ago the series Hidden Spain, which has already become a classic of photography in our country. The photographs were taken between 1975 and 1988 and contain a high anthropological value and great artistic depth; the artist documents in them the festivals, traditions and ways of life linked to rural Spain with an original look that avoids visual clichés. García Rodero captures in this series, which is still open, a deep and traditional Spain that is disappearing, the Spain of the peoples that the artist has visited and lived through.

Beliefs and uses and customs
When Cristina García Rodero started this work, two complementary images of the life of small rural Spanish populations coexisted: on the one hand, black Spain, grotesque and fierce; on the other, an idealized landscape, preserved from the transformations of the modern world. García Rodero distanced herself from both models, disregarded visual topics and conceived her work as a vast research work on rituals, beliefs and uses and customs. Thanks to this original vision, her work constitutes the most important visual documentation on folklore and religious rites in our country. Likewise, her work transcends the limits of sociology and acquires great artistic depth.
