Marriages XV: Abstractions

Marriages XV. Abstractions.

Marriages is a programme of exhibitions organised for BODEGAS RODAS by the Foto Colectania Foundation from its permanent collection of photographs since May 2007. Each exhibition aims to establish a contact point between the work of different photographers through one main topic, creating an interplay of echoes that leads to the enriching combination of two elements, such as when marrying a dish with a glass of wine.

In this case, we made a selection of works by photographers who have used abstraction as experimentation with the medium or as a creative modification of the literal character of the picture. In this exhibition we found works by the following authors:

Manel Armengol, Juan Bufill, Joan Fontcuberta, Paco Gómez, Ramón Masats, Carlos Pérez Siquier, Xavier Ribas, Humberto Rivas, Ton Sirera.

"Abstractions"

Same as in painting and sculpture, abstraction has been a recurring practice in the history of photography as well. For many artists, the camera can be a tool able to reveal aspects of reality that often the eye is not able to see. In this exhibition, we have created an itinerary where nine photographers from our collection emphasize in the most formal and expressive aspects of the picture, either by fragmenting and reframing it or by experimenting with photography's most essential materials: light and photosensitive paper.

First of all, we have included photographers who have dedicated most of their work to abstraction, such as Ton Sirera, one of the pioneers in abstract photography in Spain, and Paco Gómez, a poet of walls, traces and bare spaces. Moreover, we have found abstractions in several photographers who despite not having worked directly with the subject, they did create abstract works from formal compositions and textures. This applies to Manel Armengol, Ramón Masats, Carlos Pérez Siquier, Xavier Ribas and Humberto Rivas. Finally, the exhibition includes two works where abstraction is obtained from experimenting with the medium itself: the "generations" by Juan Bufill and the "frottogrames" by Joan Fontcuberta.
