Maridajes XVII: Portraits

Face to Face

The strength of the photographic portrait through the work of 25 Spanish and Portuguese authors in the new edition of the cycle "Maridajes"

The Bodegas Roda in Haro, La Rioja, host until November 30 a series of the best portraits of the Spanish and Portuguese authors of the Colección Colectania Collection. This is a selection of the exhibition "Car a a cara" that was presented at Foto Colectania last year, after its roaming in Valladolid, Oviedo and several municipalities of Barcelona. This is the 17th edition of the series of exhibitions "Maridajes", organized by the Fundación Foto Colectania since 2007, in order to show the diversity of views that are established when marrying the photographs of different authors of their own collection. On this occasion, the protagonists are 25 photographers and 30 selected works with the intention of bringing together such different optics as the rationality, control or complicity of the photographer with the portrayed, or with snapshots arising from spontaneity or chance. The result shows a great wealth of approaches on the portrait focused from two axes: the look and the gesture.

The set of portraits presented at Bodegas Roda under the title "Face to face", does not pretend to be a tour of the genre of portraiture in photography, but it does want to showcase outstanding examples of Spanish and Portuguese photography from the fifties to the Present through the collection of the Fundación Colectania Foto. "The portrait is one of the most attractive and suggestive genres of photography because it refers to something very close: ourselves and others. The tendency of photographers to pay special attention to details, makes them expert analysts of Looks and gestures, through the camera, they know how to capture the gesture that so often identifies us and reveals us, as a result of which the works of this exhibition are grouped around two elements in which the photographers concentrate when Face face to face with the person portrayed: the look and the body, "said Pepe Font de Mora, director of the Fundación Colectania Foto. In the exhibition, we are surrounded by direct, cross, provocative or elusive stares. Along with them, the force of the corporal gesture that communicates the solitary portraits, of groups and some self-portraits, the gaze of the photographer on itself.

Each of the photographers of the exhibition, all protagonists of Spanish and Portuguese photography of the second half of the twentieth century, faces the portrait from a different perspective. Great masters of the genre, such as Humberto Rivas, posed the portrait as a scenario in which the photographer has to dominate the contest so that his point of view prevails over the artist's intention: "This is my photograph. Photographer, the image does not work ". Also for Alberto García-Álix, the instant of shooting involves being aware of his own status as a photographer: "The portrait is full of limitations for a simple reason: the face is not the mirror of the soul. The camera implies an intention, the problem of the photographer is to find out what that intention is, what he wants to see, how he wants to see it. " Finally, Juan Manuel Castro Prieto insists on the importance of maintaining a coherent balance between the subjectivity of the photographic act and the reflection of reality: "Photography can be a window: you see what is happening and register it with the But it can also be a mirror where you reflect with what you explain."

The exhibition "Cara a cara" arrives at the Bodegas Roda after its presentation at the Fundación Foto Colectania in 2015, after having roamed in the Sala San Benito in Valladolid, Sala SabadellHerrero in Oviedo and by several municipalities of Barcelona in collaboration with the Diputació of Barcelona.
